Overview

Reconstruction.us is an online educational platform dedicated to offering comprehensive, culturally relevant content for learners ages 5-18, with a special focus on the Black cultural experience. The platform covers subjects such as history, social studies, and literature, all from a Black perspective. Its goal is to engage learners through a curriculum that highlights contributions, history, and perspectives from Black communities, aiming to foster a more inclusive and empowering educational experience. Reconstruction.us is particularly useful in both traditional and non-traditional learning settings, including after-school programs and homeschooling environments.

Our Assessment

  • The platform's cost is somewhat high but justifiable due to its rich, culturally relevant content. For smaller homeschool groups or community programs, budget constraints might limit access, making it challenging to implement on a large scale.

  • Reconstruction.us offers a user-friendly interface, though younger learners or new users may need occasional adult guidance. The lessons are well-structured, and the platform is intuitive enough for most educators and learners to navigate without major issues.

  • The platform excels in cultural relevance, offering content through a Black experience lens that aligns with best practices and supports both academic and cultural growth. It uses proven teaching methods, allowing learners to progress clearly and confidently, with assessments that accurately measure growth.

  • Reconstruction.us is highly engaging, with interactive lessons that capture and maintain learner interest. Its culturally relevant content connects with learners on a deeper level, particularly in non-traditional settings where engagement might be a challenge.

Implementation Tips for Homeschools and Community-Based Organizations

  • Parental/Adult Support: Ensure that adults are available to assist younger learners in navigating the platform, especially during the initial setup phase.

  • Curriculum Customization: Use Reconstruction as a supplement to standard curricula, focusing on integrating Black culturally-relevant content into history, literature, or social studies lessons.

  • Preparation Time: Standing up private classes for small groups is a great option to have Reconstruction classes offered to a homeschool group or community based organization; however, this requires a lot of class set up with their private class coordinators.
